Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the severe nature hazards among nature resources. There are many influence factors which control the development of spontaneous combustion such as particle size oxygen concentration etc. Weathering effects alter the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal. To explore the effect of particle size on gas emission from weathered coal under high
· The weathered coal employed for research were extracted from weathered coal of Qipanjing (E 107˚120 N 39˚210 Ordos City Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Northeast China). The samples were collected from coal powder pulverized to 80mesh and placed into a plastic bag for use.
The weathered coal measures outcrop at the surface across the southern portion of the longwall mining area and much of the surrounding area forming undulating sandy plains. In the northern portion of the longwall mining area the coal measures subcrop under the Tertiary sediments and dip to the east.
· Analysis revealed that the coalderived humic acidlike substances were similar to commercial humic acid extracted from bituminous coal. Elemental analysis of the insoluble product residue after bacterial biodegradation revealed the modification of the chemical compositions of the coal discard and geologically weathered coal substrates.

· This study suggests that applying weathered coals could improve the physicochemical properties and soil enzyme activities of the reclaimed soil in opencastmining areas of the Loess Plateau of China and the optimum applied amount of the weathered coal for reclaimed soil remediation is about 27 000 kg hm −2.
The aim of this study was to reveal the mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus adsorption by humic acids (HAs). HAs were extracted from weathered coal and used as adsorbents of ureaN and phosphateP in water. The effect of different factors was considered such as the initial concentration of ureaN
· Coal weathering is a progressive process of degradation caused by the inherent thermodynamic instability between material and its local environment (Nelson 1989).

· Figure 3 "Fresh" coal minerals at edge of coal particle The finer coal particles referred to as the "particulate block" do however show marked signs of oxidation. Of significance to coal processing operations is the fact that the particles exhibit severe cracking. In practice this will probably result in the coal breaking into fines.
· Humic acids derived from Chinese weathered coal were oxidized with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under various conditions and their chemical composition and structure were examined. The raw material humic acids (HA) and oxidized humic acids (OHAs) were characterized by elemental analysis and ultraviolet visible (UVVis) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solidstate 13C nuclear magnetic

· Opaque viscous tars derived from the carbonization of fossile carbon feedstocks such coal tars and creosote are longterm sources of groundwater contamination predominantly with poly and heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The dissolution aging and migratory behavior of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) coal tar blobs and pools forming at the aquitard is not sufficiently

· This interaction may be enhanced if the surface of the coal contains numerous oxygenated groups as in the case of Illinois No. 6 coal or a coal that has been weathered. Because of this the nonionic surfactants can spread on a hydrophilic coal surface much more easily than the oily collector dodecane thereby creating a hydrophobic surface.
Due to the shallow depth of the Nooitgedacht coal reserve (949 m) opencast rollover mining methods will be employed to extract the coal. The rollover mining method entails the process whereby the topsoil and overburden from the first cut of the opencast mine are stockpiled at the position of the last cut.

Organic analysis showed weathered coal to be enriched in C16 and C18 fatty acids and the presence of the indicator 17α(H) 21β(H)homohopane but not the β βstereoisomer was interpreted to indicate that bacteria may only have been active prior to transformation of hard coal into weathered coal.
· Coal mined at Zibulo underground is transported via overland conveyor to the Phola Coal Processing Plant (PCPP) with the surface operations delivering coal to the PCPP by road. The PCPP is a 50/50 joint operation between Anglo American Inyosi Coal (AAIC) and South 32 Limited. Zibulo produces a premium product for sale into the export market.
The distributions of mercury (Hg) in the soilscrops system from weathered coal mine spoils and environmental impacts on the study area in Shuicheng Guizhou Province China were studied. Hg and methyl mercury in soils and the crops from weathered coal mine soils were measured using cold vapour atomic fluorescence technique. and the occurrence mode of Hg was analyzed using the BCR method.
